Scalp comfort

Itching, tightness, flaking or greasiness that a shampoo change has not fixed.

A comfortable scalp is mostly about cleansing that removes oil and product without stripping, and leaving out the things that commonly irritate: fragrance allergens, harsh surfactants and heavy build-up. Persistent flaking, redness or pain is a medical question.

What is happening

The scalp is skin: it has its own oil glands, a barrier of lipids, and a microbiome. Over-cleansing with strong surfactants strips the barrier and the scalp feels tight and itchy; under-cleansing leaves oil and product that feed flaking and odour. Fragrance, including botanical essential oils, is the most common cause of cosmetic contact allergy.

Dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal infections look like "a dry scalp" from the outside but are not fixed by moisturising. They have specific treatments that a dermatologist can prescribe.

What helps

  1. 1. Cleanse with a mild surfactantGlucoside-based shampoos clean without stripping the barrier. Wash as often as your scalp gets oily, not on a schedule.
  2. 2. Go unscented if you reactChoose fragrance-free formulas if you have ever had a rash from a scented product. "Natural" essential oils are not the safer choice here.
  3. 3. Light oils for a tight scalpJojoba or rosehip, massaged in before washing, soften a dry-feeling scalp without clogging.
  4. 4. Clarify occasionallyIf you use styling products or butters, a periodic deeper cleanse removes build-up that can itch.

Ingredients to look for

Worth avoiding

  • Scratching (it damages the barrier and invites infection)
  • Very hot water
  • Layering several scented products

When to see a dermatologist

Thick yellow or silvery flakes, red or weeping patches, pustules, pain, or flaking that persists after a month of gentle care all need a dermatologist. So does any hair loss that comes with the scalp symptoms.

Educational only, not medical advice. Persistent scalp irritation, sudden hair loss or unexplained breakage warrant a visit to a dermatologist. Written by Cosmixxology R&D.
